In Australia, there are 43,028 prisoners in custody. While these people are incarcerated there is a unique opportunity to reach them with the Good News of the Bible and God’s Word.
This year, Bible League’s Bringing Hope Behind Bars partnered with 12 radio stations across Australia. With this partnership, Bible League was able to meet its initial goal of 3500 Bibles. Praise God for this milestone!
However, the need is ongoing to reach more prisoners and to maintain this program, 5000-6000 Prison Bibles are needed each year.
Bible League CEO Hilton Edwards expressed his excitement at being able to partner with the radio stations and share God’s Word with so many.
“We are so excited to be partnering with Christian radio stations around Australia to make a real and lasting difference in thousands of prisoners’ lives,” Hilton said.
“This continues the great work we have done in prisons over the past four years.”
Bible League’s Prison Bible Project Bringing Hope Behind Bars uses this opportunity to shine God’s light into the lives of prisoners in Australia.
“Then the godly people will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and give you food? When did we see you thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you with no place to stay and welcome you into our home? When did we see you without clothes and give you something to wear? When did we see you sick or in prison and care for you?’ “Then the king will answer, ‘The truth is, anything you did for any of my people here, you also did for me. Matt 25:37-40 ERV

Bible League has worked with a translation team to specifically design the Prison Bible for prisoners. The text is easy to read and understand. In addition, 52 lesson plans at the beginning of the Bible teach about topics such as:
- Following Jesus Inside of Prison;
- Seeking Forgiveness from Those You Have Hurt;
- Coping with Prison Noise;
- Understanding Compulsive Behaviour;
- Preparing for Release.
The Prison Bible also has other features such as:
- A goal setting chart;
- Scripture references for dealing with various emotions;
- An address book for family and friends.
To share the word of this ministry, Bible League partnered with 12 Christian radio stations across Australia as part of the Bringing Hope Behind Bars campaign.
The Prison Bible is translated into a prisoner’s language, helping them to see that there is a loving God who cares about them and loves them.
“As a member of a team visiting a prison, it’s been a delight to see prisoners being saved. One guy, ‘Scotty’ came to know Jesus and I gave him a Prison Bible. I’ve followed his progress as he has completed his parole and sentence against all the expectations of authorities. He is now working and is actively involved in a local church. We’ve texted regularly for two years and it’s interesting to check back over the messages and see steady spiritual growth reflected.” Lance, Prison Ministry volunteer.
Our goal is to place 5,000 – 6,000 Prison Bibles each year.
