Mike* received Christ when he was 18 years old and now, aged 44, he is the Pastor of Maranatha Church of God, in Gojo town, Ethiopia.
“I grew up in a non-Christian family that followed witchdoctors,” recalls Mike. “I thought the witchdoctor we worshipped was the only god who had the power to save us.”
In 1991, Mike’s elder brother, Hamish, accepted Jesus Christ and began sharing the Gospel with him.
“Within a few months I too decided to receive Jesus Christ as my Saviour,” said Mike.
In 2016, Mike contacted Bible League Ethiopia and 278 people in the church community were given a Bible and Project Philip resources.
“We were led to the Project Philip resources because people were too poor to afford their own Bible from the market.”
And yet, the young Church still faced great challenges. Many people in the Church had not given their hearts to God.
Mike recalls, “Elders visited witchdoctors secretly, gave sacrifices and worshipped them. Problems developed from a lack of prayer and good pastoral care for new disciples.”
The church diligently worked through the Project Philip resources and things started to change.
The Church family began living a meaningful, faithful life that influenced the non-believers in their community.
“The believers involved in our Bible study experienced the joy of reading the Bible and have the courage to witness to others,” says Mike. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve in this ministry.”
