In Australia, there are currently more than 40,000 prisoners in custody. While these people are incarcerated, there is a unique opportunity to reach them with the Good News of the Bible and God’s Word.

During February and March 2024, Bible League’s Bringing Hope Behind Bars Campaign is going to partner with 14 Christian radio stations across Australia. With this partnership, we aim to meet an initial goal of 4,000 Bibles. Each year the total need in Australian prisons is between 6,000 and 8,500 Bibles into Australian prisons.

Bible League CEO, Hilton Edwards, expressed his excitement at being able to partner with the radio stations and share God’s Word with so many.

I love it when Christian organisations partner for Kingdom Purpose and we are really excited to have 14 stations as part of the on-air radio campaign next year. We are looking forward to seeing how together we will make a real and lasting difference in thousands of prisoners lives,” Hilton said. “This ongoing work over the past nine years has seen amazing fruit, all praise to God!”

The Prison Bible uses the Easy-to-Read™ Version (ERV), helping prisoners to see that there is a loving God who cares about them and loves them.

One of our partners in the ministry to prisoners shared a story of one of the inmates they are working with:

“I visit Rachel every week in one of our women’s prisons. She was having some suicidal thoughts. Rachel wanted no visitors except me. She wanted to see me because I was the only one who could uplift her, encourage her and make her feel special. She can just offload to someone she trusts. We don’t judge and are an open ear and love them unconditionally. She wouldn’t have lasted. She said to me, ‘If it wasn’t for you, I would’ve gone on a hunger strike and starved myself to death.’ I was there for Rachel at her crossroads in life.” - a Prison Fellowship Volunteer

the prison bible

Bible League’s Prison Bible Project, Bringing Hope Behind Bars, uses this opportunity to shine God’s light into the lives of prisoners in Australia.

“The Spirit of the Lord God is on me. The Lord has chosen me to tell good news to the poor and to comfort those who are sad. He sent me to tell the captives and prisoners that they have been set free. He sent me to announce that the time has come for the Lord to show his kindness, when our God will also punish evil people. He has sent me to comfort those who are sad”. Isaiah 61:1-2 ERV

Bible League has worked with a translation team to specifically design the Prison Bible for prisoners. The text is easy to read and understand. In addition, 52 lesson plans at the beginning of the Bible teach about topics such as:

  • Following Jesus Inside of Prison;
  • Seeking Forgiveness from Those You Have Hurt;
  • Coping with Prison Noise;
  • Understanding Compulsive Behaviour;
  • Preparing for Release.

The Prison Bible also has other features such as:

  • A goal setting chart;
  • Scripture references for dealing with various emotions;
  • An address book for family and friends.
